21%.
That's the number, people, 21%.
That's the number of my peers who didn't match yesterday. Consider that. Consider the number of years in undergrad, in medical school, and the cost and stress of interviewing only to be told that "Sorry, you didn't match, please 'rematch' tomorrow afternoon!"
I don't know if I'd have the stomach for it. I also don't know if I'll have the stomach for the school's use of this number to the future classes. They've been waiting for this day since we've been the guinea pigs for the new direction the school's taken.
We warned them, but they didn't listen to us. They wanted to do things their way - and look what happened to them!
I know something like that will be said.
Apparently OB/GYN has become rather competitive since several didn't match in this area; many others were in surgical pursuits. I wish my friends and classmates luck. I wouldn't wish this on anyone, not even my beloved Worst Medical Student Ever.

Not So Happy New Year
So the new year did not start out well for me. Stepson had a touch of gastroenteritis the other day and I feel I picked this up while caring for him.
I awoke yesterday, after imbibing with a few beers, wine, and some non-heart healthy food the night before, to a very nauseated stomach and generalized body aches. Thinking that I was being punished for the overindulgence I went about my day, got the kids breakfast, and tried to clean up some of the dishes. An hour later I was in the bathroom - dying. The whole shabang of gastroenteritis hit me - diarrhea, violent vomiting, and serious hurt. I ended up putting Daughter down for a nap around eleven in the morning and proceeded to sleep.
Thankfully Stepson took care of her after she awoke because I was out till 3 pm. The remainder of the day was spent trying to keep warm (I was freezing), making it to the bathroom in time, and staying hydrated with the left over Gatorade we had from Stepson's episode. I went to sleep at 8pm and slept till 7 this morning. I feel better - hazy, but better.
So, after that experience, I had to wonder how I would be able to manage to work as a resident if that same scenario played out. Residents have been known to work through serious illnesses, some having IV's placed in order keep hydrated. All I know is I was useless yesterday - how would I care for patients?
Anyway, Happy 2008!

Here We Go Again
AOA nominations were sent out about 2 weeks ago. For the 2nd year in a row I was nominated and have to turn in the last of my information today since Friday no one was in their office due to a “mandatory” reception (which I ditched out on, of course). I asked 2 different faculty members for their letter of support and altered my essay from last year in hopes to make me look more appealing. I was feeling good about my election until I read an e-mail.
Yesterday the class of 2008 was asked to “vote” and comment on whom they feel should be elected into AOA. Goddammit.
Unfortunately I no longer have the events of my first nomination, but if you can remember, back in March I was freaking out about my class voicing their opinions on our AOA candidacy. This is based on several factors, but the fact that I ran for an executive office in our class 2 years in a row and was soundly defeated each year did not lend itself to a feeling that my class was enamoured with me. Since I had contact with limited people last year I hope some of those feelings have lessened - maybe.
Personally I find it stupid that the class gets to vote at all for an honors society. There are people who hold grudges, don’t like people for various reasons, and are vindictive assholes who can make you look bad with their comments.
From what I’ve heard there are 8 slots open this year with 16 nominees, some from last year, but many new. I’m glad to see that one of my friends who wasn’t nominated last year was on the list, but saddened to see another nominated last time absent this year. I don’t know why he was dropped, but I think he is a helluva lot better than a couple students nominated.
Anyways, hoping for a better outcome and my class to be kinder to me this year.

Oh. My. God
I just read this over at Musings of a Dinosaur. I can’t be more ticked and nauseous over the outcome. I will try and write something more about this loss of freedom of speech and expression that we, as a medical community, are quickly losing, but for now I just can't. It's overwhelming currently.
It’s enough to scare anyone and make them consider what we write and just how anonymous any of us truly are.
Dear Dr. Flea… I wish you peace and tranquility my friend. Peace and tranquility.
God.

Stupid, stupid, stupid...
I did an incredibly stupid and completely embarassing thing this week. To say that it was negligent is a little far, but I'm sure if this goes to a trial it would be found that way.
Yeah, you read that right. This event could, if the patient wanted to, go to trial. I'm not going to discuss what the infraction was that I committed, but needless to say it was not done with malice of forethought. Rather I was just trying to be proactive and fucked up royally. My ability to think ahead was apparently impaired and I went about the task without considering the magnitude of the undertaking at hand. When I informed the nurses of my findings their looks and gasps were enough for me to understand how truly screwed I was.
I was talked to at least 4 times yesterday by increasingly higher levels of power within the OB/GYN program. Just grateful that they were understanding to a degree, but I could sense how concerned they actually were. When you're scrubbing into a C-section and get pulled out, already gowned up, you begin to understand how big a deal this is. When they use the terms: "You could go to jail for something like this" (well actually the nurse said that, but still) you're apprehension heightens.
And all of this after I hated this rotation so much, but have begun to get a feel for it, feel like I can accomplish some tasks without being completely deflated and demoralized, and was not dreading everyday as I had the first couple weeks. But now...
