Hot Doc Getting His Just Desserts

Thought I'd let everyone know about a little interesting comment from a reader related to my favorite medical student: Hot Doc (AKA worst medical student ever):

hey man just wanted to let you know that "hotdoc"'s car got keyed twice
since you posted that pic of the license plate...now I know that wasn't your
intention...but....

See what happens when you're an ass? Now I didn't suggest that happen, but clearly he's upset some people and they decided to take it out on his car.

Not Enough, Too Much

Since I am a member of AMSA I receive their monthly love-fest newsletter, The New Physician. Often this is just a sounding board for medical students trying to show that they care about patients more than the medical education system that tries to destroy that bond and are fighting “The Good Fight” for patients and students alike.

Mostly, however, I find it to be just a whine fest with people complaining about shit that I don’t care about. Their most recent issue, though, sparked some anger in me (yeah, I know, big whoop).

What got me upset was a short letter about a medical student who sued the NBME because she didn’t get additional time to pump her breast milk while taking Step 2 CK. On the outside it seems quite agreeable – I mean who wouldn’t want to have a few extra minutes to avoid soaking the front of your shirt all the while obtaining that precious fluid for your child?

The issue I had was the fact that she sued at all. Apparently this student has a some issues related to ADHD and dyslexia and had received 8 additional hours to take the exam, encompassing 2 days. Because of her concerns she took the test in an isolated environment and was allowed to have her breast pump with her in her room, all prior to her suing.

Her complaint? She wasn’t allowed enough time for breaks to pump her breast milk!

WTF? Seriously, what’s this girl's problem? How are you going to handle regular resident duties if you can’t handle 2 days, 16 hours, and accommodations that were more than reasonable to take a fucking exam? The fact she sued and the people at The New Physician are supporting her demonstrates a great deal of the medical student attitude that’s concerning medical educators. The whole "hold my hand with everything" demeanor.

The fact that she won her lawsuit simply shows how screwed up the legal system is in this country as well. Where has common sense gone? Why are we allowing crap like this to be taken seriously? For all of us who've taken this exam we know that the time she received was more than adequate.

So, to this princess, this coddled little bitch, I'd like to ask: How much more time do you need to take a damn test!?! Do you think you're going to actually be able to take care of more than one patient at a time while a resident? I'm sure you're residency programs will be dying to land you and your suing ways! GOD!

Hot Doc Plate

As requested - here is the picture of the "Hot Doc" license plate. Once again, tool.

Hot Doc

This was the vanity plate I saw on WMSE's BMW today as I drove into the hospital's parking garage. I think it is a new addition because I honestly don't remember seeing it before.

This can only mean one thing: He is a tool.

Worse yet - he parks in handicapped parking with a placard. I guess if being an idiot is a handicap then he's more than welcome to the spot.

WMSE

Sorry again for the delay in posts and the rather mundane nature of the last several. Clearly my life has been put on hiatus while other, shall we say “more pressing”, issues were addressed (the sagging Sitemeter numbers I've seen clearly indicate that you're getting bored). I apologize, but life as a Medstudentgod is not always as fun and exciting as you might imagine. Sometimes administrative bullshit takes precedence. So, on with the show!

****

What do you say to someone that makes your skin crawl and, despite all attempts to convey your complete abhorrence of their "being", continuously tries to talk to you? Someone that, for all other purposes, makes you want to vomit upon them in a horrible, Exorcist-like way? Yes, the Worst Medical Student Ever (WMSE - yes all of these are about him) is on the surgery floor right now and I’ve been able to see him in action during one case (since the gen surg team is apparently taking a vacation this week and overall surgical cases have been sparse).

This student encompasses everything that I hate about politics. An absolutely absurd specimen of medical training who is, unfortunately, completely capable of appearing highly intelligent and competent; but only for very short periods of time – like the time it takes to drain a rectal abscess. After 45 minutes of bullshiting his way around his utter clueless personality his asshole can't be corked shut anymore and shit spews forth from his dumbass as though he'd been hit with a bottle of Mag citrate.

Lord knows how much I hate this guy. What irks me the most is the fact that he wants to be an Anesthesiologist. He aspires to the same specialty that I hope to match into one day and it makes my blood boil to think about him as a "colleague". Hopefully I won’t find out if he matches come March since he’s already 7 months or more behind in his 3rd year rotations (using some lie about doing an Anesthesia away rotation when he was called out for failing Step 1 his first go around). I think knowing that someone like that could actually get a job in a field that requires a great deal of quick thinking might make me physically nauseous.

Honestly I feel that if he were to be in a medical school whose sole goal wasn’t to crank out as many minority MD’s as possible he’d have been ousted long ago. But, here he is, almost 3 years down, no prospects of stopping, and with the undeniable truth that he's cheated, lied, and bought his way to this point. Certainly the fact that Daddy has significant influence (both monetarily and politically) hasn’t influenced his status here. But that’s OK. I hate him, I know what kind of a tool he is, and that’s good enough for me.

MS 4

YES!!!!

It is fucking OVER! I'm finished with 3rd year rotations, tests, quizzes, bullshit - FOREVER!!!! No more shelf exams, no more class days, no more stupid classmates who think that submitting their review of a few research papers for publication automatically makes it publishable. No more.

GAHHHHHHAHHAAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHHAAHA!!!

Can you tell I'm a little excited?

Enough Already

I’ve noticed something that has developed within me towards the end of 3rd year. My tolerance, as little as I have, has been almost completely eliminated. Mostly my intolerance of members of my class has begun to become far more evident the closer I get to being away from them. I look forward to 4th year for this reason - a long vacation from the laziness and abject stupidity that multiple people have evidenced throughout this year and the 2 previous.

I’m done with them. Thankfully I’ve had very little contact with Worst Medical Student Ever and have only interacted with him for a short duration during morning rounds (when he’d actually show up that is) and the one day a week class. During that time I’ve told him to shut up, grow the fuck up, damn near turned around and bitch-smacked him for comments he was making during lectures, and developed a very fun game with some friends related to Chewbaca. I can’t really explain it because you just won’t get how hilarious it is to mimic his “Ohhhs” with a Chewy purrrr. Hey, I already warned you about not getting it.

I’m not the only one who has just had it with our peers. A friend of mine told me recently of being bullied by another poor student. Unfortunately I’ve not had a rotation with her and have only received this information from the few and far between contacts we have. Mostly I get updates from her blog (which I will not share here as it’s not anon and would only help to out me as well as her) as to the recent insult received by this ass. She’s close to taking it to a physical level with the punk and I whole-heartedly agree with this line of action. No reason for that type of behavior.

So as this week comes to a close I believe that I’ll take a long and much needed breather from classmates. I plan on studying for Step 2 CK which I'll take in August, but I’ll steer clear of the various forums where classmates may be found.

******
On another note, I think I’m becoming an alcoholic. Daughter saw a beer bottle under the stairs of our apartment last week and told Wife “Daddy’s home! There’s daddy’s drink!” I think that says something - like perhaps it’s time to stop having a beer with every dinner (OK 2 or 3 beers, sheesh).

3...2...1

So, with one week left in OB/GYN and no more clinical or floor work required (fuck yeah) I thought I’d capture the craziest and just plain bigoted statements I’ve heard on this rotation. With that being said, enjoy:

“You have to have a vagina to do that. You can’t do that without a vagina.” (nurse telling me I can’t perform a certain procedure on a patient)

“The uterus and vagina are incredible. Amazing. Truly God knew what She was doing.” (attending discussing the changes made during pregnancy and afterwards)

“The womb is sacred and should be worshipped. Bow down!” (resident screwing with me)

“I hate fat people. Can’t see shit and it smells.” (ARMY doc after speculum exam that took a little too long with a rather ripe patient)

“Anesthesia? Really? But you can’t do cool shit...like cutting people up.” (ARMY doc during a hysterectomy)

“My mom usually goes to a male OB/GYN because back in her home country most of them are males. She’s seeing one now and told me: He’s gay, but a good doctor anyway.” (friend telling me about the differences between American women wanting to see mostly female OB/GYNs and his home country)

“I had my hand deep inside her vaginal orifice” (worst medical student ever discussing his examination during morning rounds - I truly hate this jackass)

“I thought the hater-nation was over after 2nd year ended” (worst medical student again trying to fight back tears as all the medical students on service turned against him and his incessant laziness before morning rounds)

“So you put it against the os-hole?” (Another ARMY doc discussing a tool with a rep)

"I'm taking that for my Bipolar Disorder. Oh yeah (stares blankly at ceiling and then head slowly turns back towards physician) I also take it for my multiple personalities." (various patient encounters where a history was being taken)

One more week and then it’s all over. This week’s going to be fucking hard as hell - at least 5 or 6 exams, reports, presentations, etc. Just breath and get through it. It’s almost over. I had a friend tell me that she thought I'd enjoy it because there's a lot of procedures. I did like the OR, but everything else just was painful. I truly had the easiest out of most of the students and am thankful for that. God I hate OB/GYN.

Team Player

***Warning: severe bitching and whining in this post.***

A couple weeks ago I had a student moment. I lost it on some of my “colleagues” because they’d not been on time to round on patients for a week and we had a patient that wasn’t seen. 15 minutes before rounds my friend and I quickly obtained the information and saw the patient for rounds, but did not write a note. During rounds I explained this, telling the other students (in the presence of the resident) that I would not write the note. There were enough students to see at least one patient and these 3 students had not seen anyone in a week.

This week I was taken aside by the resident who was present during my tirade. She explained that she understood me being upset, but that I was in the wrong for not writing a note on a patient I’d seen. My job was not to monitor other students. I was supposed to ensure that I was seeing patients and covering where it needs to be done. In essence, be a team player.

I find it extremely absurd that when people who have been victimized by parasites and suffer from it are expected to remain stoic. Apparently my expression of frustration showed “weakness” to this resident and showed her that I was a potential “problem student”. Hmmm, what about those who don’t even do their damn work? Aren’t they more of a concern? What about the fact that they’re going to get a very similar evaluation because no one has paid attention to the fact that they aren’t presenting during rounds? Am I just supposed to accept this chronic and habitual laziness while I work longer and harder? And if so, why?

I’ve heard of people talking about letting “gunners” do the work while they slack. I joked about letting other students who were interested in OB/GYN perform all the deliveries, but when it comes down to it I have a work ethic. I’m in no way a gunner on this rotation (perhaps on surgery I was, but certainly not here), but I still feel that when there is a requirement for students to see postpartum patients then everyone needs to be getting here on time and getting their notes written. If there’s a paucity of patients for a couple days and not everyone gets a chance to present at rounds then you can read. Not showing up till morning rounds start is not an option.

It’s just shows a general character flaw in some people who feel they’ll get away with as much as they can whenever they can. It shows a general lack of concern for patients and poor medicine in general. My problem is that I’ll get the same evaluation they do when they clearly don’t deserve it.
